Heart Shaped Pouch #2

This is my second attempt at a version of the gusseted, heart shaped pouch from Jim Webb's book.  It measures about 7.5" at its widest across the top by 7.5" high.  The strap, full-length gusset, and back with fold-over flap are cowhide, and the front, the fringed welt and a small interior pocket are pigskin.  The design on the flap is from a book of southern backcountry design.

Small pigskin pouch

This pouch is made from lightweight pigskin and is 6" wide by 6.5" tall. The inside back is lined with a homespun fabric and there is a small hanging pocket of ticking. The strap is adjusted by a wooden button sewn onto the back of the bag.

Re-worked Ticking and Barktan Bag

After some thought I decided to rework this pouch: http://ewingscreekpouches.blogspot.com/2013/09/ticking-barktan-bag.html.
I added a thinner strap of cowhide with an iron buckle, and a small homespun fabric pocket hanging inside for caps, balls, etc. I also waterproofed the ticking with a mixture of beeswax and boiled linseed oil. This was donated as a prize for the 17th Annual Shandakan Primitive Biathlon.

 

 

Bag Axe Sheath

The inside of the cowhide sheath is lined with deerskin rawhide.  The strap is made from hemp. 

 

 

Large Beavertail Flap Pouch

This pouch was inspired by one in the book "The Kentucky Rifle Hunting Pouch" by Madison Grant.  The original shown in the book is listed as found in the valley of Virginia and dating 1835-40.  This is made from 3/4 oz vegetable tan cowhide, and has a strap made by weaver Kris Pollizzi, and has a homespun-style fabric lining the underside of the flap.  The main body of the pouch measures about 7.5" wide by 8.5" tall.

Ticking & Barktan Bag

This pouch is made with mostly ticking fabric, and has a flap and a back panel of barktan deer hide.  There is a layer of linen inside as well to give it some extra strength.  The basic design was inspired by a pouch shown in Jim Webb's book on southern pouches and accoutrements.  The overall size is 6 1/2" wide by 7" tall.  The strap is made from hemp webbing and to it I attached a length of stained leather cord with a forged vent pick and a carved antler powder measure.  The small green horn was made by Pete Hutton.  

Normandie Farm Pouch

This bag was made for a farmer in Normandy, France to use in what they refer to as "broadcasting", basically to hold the seeds as they sow the fields they have plowed.While this isn't a shot pouch, or meant to accompany a firearm, I made it using the same techniques and materials I have been using, only increasing the size, which is about 13" wide x 12" tall.  The body and strap are made from vegetable tan cowhide with pigskin binding.  The inside is lined with a lightweight browned linen. The bag was dyed with different shades of red and brown until I had a finish I found pleasing.  On the back, there is a loop between strap attachments to hang a tool or knife etc, and on the straps themselves there are numerous large holes punched to enable the hanging of other tools and objects if desired.  For the designs (stitched on the bag and burned onto the strap) I drew inspiration from sources including the Bayeaux Tapestry, and similar Norman inspired motifs wherever I could find them. Where the front of the bag was pierced, exposing the linen fabric underneath, the linen was waterproofed by melting and heating beeswax.  The entire bag was treated with neatsfoot oil which made the leather very soft and pliable.
